Puppy feeding: how much and how often?
Puppies need more energy than adult dogs, in smaller meals more often. Exactly how much depends on weight and on how big your dog will get.
The short answer
Feed a puppy four times a day until 3 months, three times from 3 to 6 months and twice from 6 months (Merck Veterinary Manual). Work out the daily amount from weight and expected adult weight with the FEDIAF formula: a puppy that will weigh about 50 lb needs about 1,179 kcal at 4 months, or about 3.1 cups of dry food with 380 kcal per cup.
How often a day?
- 6 to 12 weeks: four times
- 3 to 6 months: three times
- 6 to 12 months: twice
- From 12 months: once or twice
That’s the feeding schedule in the Merck Veterinary Manual. The manual’s text, by contrast, says three times a day from weaning. The calculator follows the table.
How much a day?
The chart shows cups of dry food per day for puppies growing along the growth curve. The columns depend on the expected adult weight.
| Age | Meals | 10 lb | 25 lb | 50 lb | 90 lb |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 months | 4 | 0.78 cups | 1.44 cups | 2.15 cups | 3.20 cups |
| 3 months | 3 | 0.92 cups | 1.75 cups | 2.80 cups | 4.21 cups |
| 4 months | 3 | 0.97 cups | 1.89 cups | 3.10 cups | 4.69 cups |
| 6 months | 2 | 1.01 cups | 1.99 cups | 3.33 cups | 5.10 cups |
| 9 months | 2 | 1.00 cups | 2.00 cups | 3.37 cups | 5.25 cups |
| 12 months | 2 | fully grown | 2.01 cups | 3.36 cups | 5.21 cups |
Dry food with 380 kcal per cup. Energy per the FEDIAF guidelines (2025), weight at each age from their growth curve. Small dogs are fully grown at 12 months.
Why the amount soon barely goes up
A young puppy needs a lot of energy per pound to grow. The closer it gets to its adult weight, the less it needs. That’s why the daily amount stays almost the same from about 6 months, even though the puppy keeps gaining.
Never free-feed
The FEDIAF guidelines say puppies should never be fed as much as they want. Too much food speeds up growth and can harm the skeleton, especially in large breeds. VCA Animal Hospitals also mention obesity in young dogs.
Weigh and adjust
- Weigh your puppy regularly, ideally every week (Merck).
- Ribs easy to feel, waist visible from above: that’s the goal.
- Treats count: all together at most 10% of daily calories.
- If your puppy doesn’t gain steadily, talk to your vet.
Questions
How many times a day should a puppy eat?
Four times a day until 3 months, three times from 3 to 6 months, twice from 6 months (Merck Veterinary Manual).
How much should a 4-month-old puppy eat?
It depends on its size. A puppy that will weigh about 50 lb needs about 3.1 cups of dry food with 380 kcal per cup a day at 4 months; one with an adult weight of 10 lb about 1 cup. The puppy food calculator works it out for your puppy.
Should I follow the bag?
As a start, yes, but bags use averages. It’s more accurate with your puppy’s weight and your food’s calories. The scale shows whether the amount is right.
