Is my dog overweight?
The scale alone doesn’t tell you much: a 65-lb dog can be lean or round. Your dog’s shape tells you more. You can check ribs, waist and belly in a minute.
How to check
Stand behind your dog, put your thumbs along the spine and spread your hands flat over the rib cage.
- Ribs: you can feel them easily under the coat without pressing.
- Waist: from above, you see a waist behind the ribs.
- Belly: from the side, it rises behind the rib cage and doesn’t hang.
- Base of the tail: no fat pad there.
The 1–9 body condition score
Vets use a 1–9 scale called the body condition score. 4 and 5 are ideal. To some owners, that already looks “too thin”.
- 1–3: too thin. Ribs, spine and hip bones are easy to see.
- 4–5: ideal. Ribs easy to feel, waist visible from above, belly tucked up.
- 6–7: overweight. Ribs only felt under a layer of fat, waist barely visible, fat over the lower back.
- 8–9: severely overweight. Ribs hard or impossible to feel, no waist, the belly hangs.
What each step means in pounds
Each step above 5 means roughly 10% more weight than ideal: about 10% at 6, 20% at 7, 30% at 8 and 40% at 9.
So a 55-lb dog at a score of 6 would have an ideal weight of about 50 lb. That’s a rough guide. Set the target weight with your vet, who can also check muscle.
How common is it?
In a 2022 survey of US vet clinics, 59% of dogs were overweight or obese. More than a third of the owners of these dogs thought their dog’s weight was normal.
What staying lean adds up to
In a long-term study of 48 Labradors, one dog in each pair got 25% less food than its partner for life. These dogs lived about 1.8 years longer: a median of 13.0 instead of 11.2 years. The study was run by a pet food company and included only one breed.
What to do next
- Weigh the food instead of guessing with a cup.
- Count treats: all together at most 10% of daily calories.
- Weigh your dog every two weeks and adjust the amount.
- At a score of 8 or more, or a target weight 20% below the current one: plan it with your vet.
Questions
When is a dog overweight?
From a score of 6 on the body condition scale, when you can only feel the ribs under a layer of fat. Overweight means 10–20% above ideal weight; more than 20% is obese.
How do I find my dog’s ideal weight?
From the body shape: count the steps above 5 and take off about 10% for each. Your vet can tell you more precisely.
My dog is very muscular. Does the scale still work?
Yes, it rates fat, not weight. Vets rate muscle on a separate scale. A dog can carry too much fat and still have too little muscle.
