Pet food cost calculator

What does your pet’s food really cost? We work out the daily amount and split the pack price across it.

Question 1 of 3

Which pet are you calculating for?

Pet

Decimals help, e.g. 22.5. No pet scale? Weigh yourself, then again holding your pet.

Treats aren’t included. The daily amount is a starting point, like in the food calculator.

The short answer

The cost depends on the daily amount, not just the price per pound: food with more calories per pound means you feed less of it. Example: a neutered 22 lb dog needs about 168 g (5.9 oz) of dry food with 3,750 kcal/kg. If a 30 lb bag costs $55, that’s about $0.68 per day or $21 per month.

Questions

Is pricier food also more expensive per day?

Not necessarily. If a food has more calories per pound, you feed less of it. So compare the cost per day: run both foods through the calculator.

How much does dog food cost per month?

It mostly depends on weight and food. A neutered 22 lb dog on dry food at $55 per 30 lb bag costs about $21 per month; on wet food at $2.49 per 13 oz can, about $129.

Are treats included?

No. Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. Add them on top.

Does it calculate like the food calculator?

Yes. The daily amount uses the same formulas (Merck Veterinary Manual). Below the result you can change age, neutering and activity.
