Questions
What is toxic to rabbits?
For example avocado, chocolate, onions and rhubarb. If your rabbit ate some, call your vet or an emergency vet clinic right away.
What do rabbits mainly eat?
Hay and grass: about 85% of the diet according to the RSPCA, 85–90% according to Merck. Every day, offer a bundle of hay about as big as your rabbit (RSPCA). Fresh water must always be available, ideally in a bowl (German TVT).
How much fresh food does a rabbit need?
Merck suggests about 1 cup of fresh vegetables per 2 pounds of body weight a day, and the House Rabbit Society at least 2 cups per 6 pounds. The German veterinary welfare association TVT recommends much more, about 200 g per kg. Change the diet gradually.
Do rabbits need pellets?
Sources disagree. UK and US sources recommend a small, measured amount every day (RWAF 15 g per kg; Merck about 1/4 cup per 5 pounds), while the German TVT advises against dry food unless needs are higher and a vet agrees. All agree: no muesli mixes, because rabbits pick out the sugary bits (PDSA, RSPCA).
How much fruit can a rabbit have?
Only a little, as a treat: the House Rabbit Society says about 1 teaspoon per 2 pounds of body weight a day, PDSA an occasional small piece (about 1/8 of an apple). The Royal Veterinary College is stricter: only as an occasional monthly treat in small quantities.
Can rabbits eat grass clippings?
No. Lawn mower clippings ferment quickly (Royal Veterinary College) and can be extremely harmful (Blue Cross). Fresh grass, picked or cut with scissors, is fine.
How do I change my rabbit’s diet?
Slowly, over 2 to 4 weeks (PDSA), and one new food at a time (RWAF). Sudden changes can upset the digestive system (RSPCA).
