Can chickens eat chocolate?
No – toxic. Chickens should never eat chocolate. UF/IFAS Extension says chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both toxic to poultry. Even small amounts can cause hyperactivity, seizures, heart problems or death. UC Cooperative Extension also calls chocolate toxic, and RSPCA Australia lists it among things chickens should never get.
Good to know: UF/IFAS also lists candy and sugar under “never feed.” The Merck Veterinary Manual reports deaths in livestock fed cocoa byproducts.
Did your chicken eat some?
If your hen ate something toxic or seems unwell, call your vet – the RSPCA says to always contact a vet if you’re concerned. Keep a sample of the feed (Merck Veterinary Manual).
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply)
- Tell your vet what your hen ate, how much and when.
