Can chickens eat watermelon?
Yes, but only a little: chickens can eat watermelon. RSPCA Australia shows hens enjoying a piece of cold watermelon as a treat on a hot day. Extension.org (University of Arizona) suggests freezing watermelon into an ice block in a heat wave. But Penn State Extension names melons among foods commonly contaminated with Listeria and advises against certain treats for that reason, so we err on the side of caution.
How to serve it: a small piece, chilled or frozen in an ice block
Good to know: Hens eat less in hot weather, so limit treats then to make sure they still eat their layer feed (extension.org, Mississippi State).
Kitchen scraps: The rules depend on where you live. US extension services allow small amounts of table scraps, no more than 10 percent of the daily diet (Oklahoma State). In the UK, it’s illegal to feed kitchen scraps to chickens, even pet hens (RSPCA, APHA). In the EU, Germany’s agriculture ministry (BMLEH) says kitchen and food waste must not be fed to laying hens.
