Can cockatiels eat mealworms?
Yes, but only a little: cockatiels can eat mealworms. In the wild, cockatiels occasionally eat insects along with seeds, vegetables and fruit, the AAV says. The Swiss animal welfare society (STS) lists insects as a protein food, usually once a week in small amounts, and says cockatiels need protein every day while breeding, raising chicks and molting. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT), however, says animal protein can be added only during molting and chick rearing, and only in small amounts.
How to serve it: a small amount, usually once a week, according to the STS
Good to know: None of our sources names mealworms specifically – they talk about insects in general.
