Can horses eat tomatoes?
Better not: horses shouldn’t eat tomatoes. Penn State Extension says to keep tomatoes away from horses, since they belong to the nightshade family, which it calls toxic to horses. According to ASPCA and CliniTox (University of Zurich), it’s mainly the plant that’s toxic, not the ripe fruit. We still recommend not feeding tomatoes.
Good to know: According to Rutgers, the leaves, stems and green parts of the tomato plant slow down the gut and can cause colic, which can be fatal. If your horse ate any, call your vet right away and don’t wait and see (RSPCA).
