Can chickens eat beans?
No – toxic. Chickens should never eat beans. UF/IFAS Extension says uncooked beans can be deadly to chickens because they contain a natural toxin called phytohemagglutinin. RSPCA Australia, UC Cooperative Extension, Colorado State and the British Hen Welfare Trust warn against them too.
Good to know: UF/IFAS considers cooked beans generally safe, but in the UK, it’s illegal to feed kitchen scraps to chickens (RSPCA).
Did your chicken eat some?
If your hen ate something toxic or seems unwell, call your vet – the RSPCA says to always contact a vet if you’re concerned. Keep a sample of the feed (Merck Veterinary Manual).
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply)
- Tell your vet what your hen ate, how much and when.
