Can cockatiels eat rowan berries?
Yes, but only a little: cockatiels can eat rowan berries. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) lists rowan berries as fruit for cockatiels. The RSPCA mentions native berries such as rowan and hawthorn for parrots but warns that some native berries are poisonous. The Swiss animal welfare society (STS) mentions small pieces of fruit, the Merck Veterinary Manual recommends 5–10% fresh fruit for small birds such as cockatiels, and RSPCA Australia calls fruit a treat because of its sugar. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT), on the other hand, lists fruit as part of the daily diet, so we err on the side of caution.
How to serve it: ripe, washed, unsprayed, a few berries
Good to know: Only offer berries you can identify for sure – the RSPCA warns that some native berries are poisonous. If your cockatiel got hold of an unknown berry or seems unwell, the AAV says to get help from an avian vet immediately, even if you only suspect it.
