Can dogs eat olives?
AKC says olives aren’t toxic to dogs and are fine in small amounts, ideally plain, pitted and unsalted. Brined olives are very salty, and too much salt harms dogs (AKC, ASPCA); pits can get stuck in the throat or gut (AKC).
How to serve it: plain, pitted, unsalted; no stuffing, garlic, seasoning or oil
Good to know: Never give olives soaked in alcohol (AKC). If your dog ate a lot of olives or pits, ask your vet (AKC).
Questions
Can cats eat olives?
Yes, but only a little. Cats Protection lists the olive tree (Olea europaea) as safe for cats. Brined olives are salty, though, and too much salt can poison cats (Pet Poison Helpline) – so a small piece at most.
