Can budgies eat onions?
No – toxic. Budgies should never eat onions. The AAV says plants in the onion family, such as onions and garlic, are toxic to many species. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists onions among foods not to feed birds, and RSPCA Australia calls them dangerous.
Good to know: Green onions, chives and leeks belong to the onion family too.
Did your budgie eat some?
If your budgie ate some or seems unwell, the AAV says to get help from an avian vet immediately, even if you only suspect it.
- ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply)
- Tell your vet what your budgie ate, how much and when.
