Can cockatiels drink coffee?

Toxic

No – toxic. Cockatiels should never drink coffee. The AAV says caffeine is toxic to birds. RSPCA Australia lists coffee and tea among things that could be dangerous and should be kept away from your bird. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises against caffeinated drinks, and Purdue says caffeinated products can be toxic even in tiny amounts.

Good to know: The AAV does suggest herbal tea made with bird-safe herbs such as mint, chamomile or lemon balm as enrichment for parrots – brewed weak and cooled completely.

Did your cockatiel drink some?

If your cockatiel drank some or seems unwell, the AAV says to get help from an avian vet immediately, even if you only suspect it.

  • ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply)
  • Tell your vet what your cockatiel drank, how much and when.
