Can degus eat nuts?

Only a little

Yes, but only a little: degus can eat nuts. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) says to feed very fatty nuts only as single treats by hand. The Swiss animal welfare society (STS) says nuts make good treats, but only occasionally and in small amounts, and that they don’t belong in a food mix. The Zurich animal welfare society (Zürcher Tierschutz) lists walnuts and hazelnuts in their shells among foods to give only rarely. None of the degu sources mentions peanuts, almonds, cashews or pistachios specifically.

How to serve it: one at a time by hand (TVT), in the shell (Zürcher Tierschutz)

Good to know: The TVT says single seeds or nuts fed by hand are a good way to build trust with your degus.
