Can degus eat sunflower seeds?
Yes, but only a little: degus can eat sunflower seeds. Germany’s TVT says to feed very fatty sunflower seeds only as single treats by hand. The Swiss animal welfare society (STS) says they make good treats, but only occasionally and in small amounts, and shouldn’t be part of a food mix. The Zurich animal welfare society (Zürcher Tierschutz) lists sunflower seeds among foods to give only rarely, and PDSA among foods to give only once a month.
How to serve it: one at a time by hand, no more than once a month (PDSA)
Good to know: The TVT says single seeds or nuts fed by hand are a good way to build trust with your degus.
