How much to feed a Standard Schnauzer: weight and feeding chart
A Standard Schnauzer usually weighs 30–50 lb. Here’s how much to feed per day, a feeding chart by weight and activity, and a puppy weight chart.
How much should a Standard Schnauzer eat per day?
An adult Standard Schnauzer weighing 30–50 lb eats about 2⅛–3⅛ cups (212–310 g) of dry food a day if spayed or neutered with normal activity – that’s 794–1,164 kcal.
That’s for food with 380 kcal/cup (3,750 kcal/kg), using 1.6 × 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75 kcal from the Merck Veterinary Manual. Calculate with your own food right below.

Standard Schnauzer feeding tips
What the sources say about feeding this breed. For health questions, talk to your vet.
- Play and long hikes
Standard Schnauzers are an energetic breed, says the AKC: they love to play with their people and other dogs, insist on being included in family activities and love long hikes; they don’t do well left alone or tied up in the yard. The Royal Kennel Club lists up to an hour of exercise a day. Choose the column by how much yours actually moves.
- Treats count
The AKC also advises watching a Standard Schnauzer’s calories and weight: too many treats can lead to obesity. Count everything your dog gets between meals as part of the daily amount.
- Miniature, Standard or Giant?
Schnauzers come in three sizes, each a separate breed: the Standard is larger than the Miniature and smaller than the Giant, says the AKC. It lists 11–20 lb for the Miniature and 75–95 lb (males) or 55–80 lb (females) for the Giant Schnauzer. Both have their own pages with a feeding chart (under “More breeds”).
- Measured meals
For adult dogs, the Merck Veterinary Manual recommends measured meals, such as two a day at set times. Most dogs get too heavy when food is left out all day.
