Can chinchillas eat dried herbs?
Yes, chinchillas can eat dried herbs. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) lists dried herbs alongside hay as a staple. The Swiss animal welfare society (STS) names dried chamomile, sage, fennel, clover, ribwort plantain (the weed, not the banana-like fruit) and yarrow, among others, the RSPCA mentions dried herbs and plantain (the weed), and Blue Cross and the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) name dried herbs too. Woodgreen suggests dried birch, apple and pear leaves for daily foraging, and dried basil, oregano, thyme (a little), raspberry and blackberry leaves as occasional treats.
How to serve it: dried, mixed, a little of each (Woodgreen)
Good to know: The STS says fresh herbs should be offered only in very small amounts, and when in doubt, not at all. It calls the leaves of stone fruit trees completely unsuitable.
