Can hamsters eat mealworms?
Yes, but only a little: hamsters can eat mealworms. PDSA calls mealworms an occasional treat, like nuts or small pieces of boiled egg. Woodgreen, Blue Cross and the German Animal Welfare Federation list them too. Crickets and grasshoppers work as well, preferably dried (German Animal Welfare Federation, TVT).
How to serve it: one or two fresh mealworms (Woodgreen) or dried insects
Good to know: Sources differ on how often to give animal protein, mealworms included. The TVT says once a week, the German Animal Welfare Federation three times, the Swiss animal welfare society (STS) three to four times. If the dry food already contains dried mealworms, Woodgreen says to skip the extra ones.
