Can rats eat dog food?

Only a little

Yes, but only a little: rats can eat dog food. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) names dry dog food for the small share of animal protein. Blue Cross mentions dry dog food as a protein source. Woodgreen includes fish-based dog kibble with no meat or animal derivatives and at least 20–25% protein in its homemade food mix. The Merck Veterinary Manual and the RSPCA suggest hard or low-calorie dog biscuits for gnawing. Woodgreen lists wet cat food, meat in jelly or gravy, among healthy treats to feed in moderation and as a way to help give rats their medicine. As the main food, though, RSPCA Australia recommends food designed specifically for rats rather than pellets for rabbits, guinea pigs or other animals.

How to serve it: dry food, as a small addition (TVT)
