Can dogs eat goose?

Better not

Better not: dogs shouldn’t eat goose. Roast goose is too fatty and too heavily seasoned, says Germany’s Federal Chamber of Veterinarians. It can cause diarrhea and vomiting, so leftovers don’t belong in the bowl. Cooked goose bones splinter and can cause internal injuries.

Good to know: Skin, drippings and gravy can cause pancreatitis (Pet Poison Helpline). Stuffing often contains onion and garlic, which are toxic to dogs (AKC, Dogs Trust).

Questions

Can dogs eat goose bones?

No: Cooked goose bones splinter and can cause serious internal injuries (German Federal Chamber of Veterinarians). Larger pieces can cause a blockage, and smaller ones can pierce the stomach or intestinal wall, which may need surgery (Royal Kennel Club). Put bones and leftovers in a closed bin right away.

My dog ate a goose bone. What should I do?

Call your vet for advice (AKC). If your dog is retching hard, drooling or struggling to breathe, something may be stuck in the throat: go to your vet or an emergency clinic right away (University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover).

Is goose meat without skin okay?

We found no expert source on meat without skin specifically. The German Federal Chamber of Veterinarians calls the meat from the roast too fatty overall. According to USDA, roasted goose meat without skin has more than three times the fat of turkey. ASPCA says a small piece of boneless turkey is a fine treat, so that’s the better choice.

Can dogs eat raw goose?

Better not: Raw poultry in particular can carry Salmonella and Campylobacter, which are also dangerous to people (German Federal Chamber of Veterinarians). Dogs can get infected through raw meat (BfR).
