Can budgies eat apples?
Yes, but only a little: budgies can eat apples. The German Animal Welfare Federation lists apples as suitable fruit. So do Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) and the Swiss animal welfare society (STS). The RSPCA mentions de-seeded apples, and UC Davis says to remove apple seeds.
How to serve it: washed, cored, a small piece
Good to know: Remove the seeds or pit first – according to the AAV, they contain a cyanide compound and should never be fed to pet birds. The German Animal Welfare Federation says to offer fruit only in small amounts because of its sugar, and RSPCA Australia calls fruit a treat. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT), on the other hand, lists fruit as part of the daily diet, so we err on the side of caution.
