Can degus eat herbs?
Yes, degus can eat herbs in small amounts. The Zurich animal welfare society (Zürcher Tierschutz) lists culinary herbs such as basil, dill, parsley and mint for several times a week. PDSA names fresh and dried herbs – oregano, mint, parsley, basil, lemon balm and cilantro (coriander) – for once or twice a week. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) and the Swiss animal welfare society (STS) also count herbs as fresh food, and Woodgreen lists dried herbs among healthy treats.
How to serve it: fresh or dried, once or twice a week (PDSA)
Good to know: PDSA’s list also includes chives, but chives belong to the onion family, which the Zürcher Tierschutz says degus should never have.
