Can degus eat onions?

Better not: degus shouldn’t eat onions. The Zurich animal welfare society (Zürcher Tierschutz) says degus should never have plants from the onion family. Botanically, this family includes onions, leeks, chives, garlic and wild garlic. PDSA, by contrast, lists green onions (scallions) and chives for once or twice a week and leeks in very small amounts, so we err on the side of caution.
