Can degus eat ribwort plantain?
Yes, degus can eat ribwort plantain in small amounts. The Zürcher Tierschutz lists plantain for every day, but PDSA says fresh greens only once or twice a week. This is the weed, not the banana-like fruit – the Zurich animal welfare society (Zürcher Tierschutz) names it among fresh wild herbs, along with dandelion, daisies and clover. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT) also suggests fresh herbs and flowers every day in summer, and the Swiss animal welfare society (STS) fresh herbs and flowers 2 to 3 times a week.
How to serve it: fresh – daily according to the Zürcher Tierschutz, though PDSA suggests fresh greens only once or twice a week
Good to know: PDSA says to introduce new foods slowly to avoid upsetting your degu’s stomach.
