Can rats eat bread?

Better not: rats shouldn’t eat bread. Woodgreen and the University of Minnesota list bread, but the Zurich animal welfare society (Zürcher Tierschutz) says never. Woodgreen counts dry bread as a healthy treat, and the University of Minnesota includes whole wheat bread among foods you can offer. The Swiss animal welfare society (STS) mentions dried bread but warns against too much because of the salt. We err on the side of caution.
