Can chinchillas eat pears?

Better not: chinchillas shouldn’t eat pears. Merck mentions pear alongside apple as an occasional treat, and the University of Minnesota very occasionally. Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT), however, says chinchillas don’t tolerate fruit, and Woodgreen and the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) advise against it too, so we err on the side of caution.

Good to know: Pear branches for gnawing are fine, though (PDSA). As an occasional treat, the TVT suggests dried rose hips.
